Cyprus is an ideal investment gateway to the European Union, as well as a portal for investment outside the EU, particularly into the Middle East, India and China. As a member of the wider EU and Eurozone community, Cyprus ensures safety and stability for investors, while at the same time offers market access to more than 500 million EU citizens.
Cyprus’ legal system, based on English Common Law principles, is widely recognised as a business-friendly and effective system that ensures transparency and reliability in business practices. Offering foreign businesses, a familiar and reliable framework within which to operate.
Cyprus is also fully compliant with the EU Directives and Regulations, the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF), OECD, FATCA, the Financial Stability Forum laws.
Moreover, Cyprus offers an attractive tax regime, providing access to an extensive network of more than 60 Double Tax Treaties, and maintaining a corporate tax rate of 12.5%, offering international investors the confidence to set up business or headquarters of their business in Cyprus.
Key areas to do Business in Cyprus
Key reasons to do business in Cyprus
Advice on regulatory matters is vital to any client, international and local, in achieving compliance with Republic of Cyprus and EU requirements, thereby minimising risks and avoiding adverse publicity. Our Regulatory Law Team services’ spectrum includes:
Planning, Zoning and Sales Unit
Immovable property sales in Cyprus have experienced a resurgence in the last couple of years, usually in combination with major commercial and residential development. The booming construction activity has been supported by the foreign direct investment incentives of Cyprus that have attracted many international investors to Cyprus. In response to the demand for swift and efficient legal advice and contract negotiations, our firm has capitalized on the experience of its members and has developed a "Real Estate Department" which can deal with the negotiations, drafting and execution issues which may arise for private individuals or corporate clients who aim to invest, develop, own, lease, rent, sell or acquire any type of immovable property in Cyprus. We aim to provide reliable legal advice and representation to both local and international clients at any stage of the property transactions. Our expertise extends to matters dealing with governmental and local authority licensing and permits, and especially with regards to the procedures to be normally observed with the Planning Office and the Land Registry.
Our main Real Estate Department practice and procedure entails:
We are one of the leading firms in this field and we have handled mergers and acquisitions of private, public and listed companies. We have been involved in the acquisitions of banking and insurance institutions in Cyprus.
George Christodoulou, Partner of our firm and Head of the Department, is a co author of M&A chapter, providing practical information on the laws and regulations governing public M&A in Cyprus, published in Mergers and Acquisitions Handbook 2008
The firm boasts one of the best litigations teams on the island. Loukis Papaphilippou has an exemplary record at Court setting precedents in admiralty, administrative, constitutional and company law. With more than 55 years experience to his name he continues to litigate himself and to inspire the ten men strong litigation team of our firm. The firm has been highly successful in recent corporate and white collar litigation. The litigation and arbitration department of our firm is currently engaged in trusts and tracing litigations, in association with the biggest City law firms.
The bulk of of our litigation work falls under the following sectors:
The past ten years or so have been very exciting from a technological point of view and Information Technology has encroached itself into the business practices of our clients both as a primary business activity but also as a powerful tool.
We have tried, successfully we think, to keep in touch with technological developments and to assist our clients in confronting the legal issues in discovering, introducing and using Computers, Software and the Internet.
Intellectual Property has gone through a concurrent and inevitable transformation as a result of the developments in the IT industry. That is why at LP & Co. LLC we have listened to our clients' needs and are always treating IP as inevitably linked with IT.
Some of the areas in which we have had practical experience:
This specific area of law has seen a lot of development over the last 2 decades. Since the accession of Cyprus to the European Union and the abolition of the offshore company status, new incentives have been introduced in order to maintain the beneficial double tax treaties network that the Cyprus International Business Companies enjoy with 62 countries. In addition, and subsequent to the Cadbury Schweppes ruling of the ECJ, a number of third countries are redrafting their tax legislation to achieve conformity with its provisions.
Cyprus is the ideal jurisdiction to register and maintain a holding company to receive the beneficial tax rate of 12.5% over net income. Recently legislation has been passed to enable the registration of the Cyprus Societe Europeas (SE).
The immigration team of L Papaphilippou & Co LLC offers a personalized, comprehensive, integrated immigration law service and advise, to individuals, entrepreneurs, private investors, private and public companies, major property developers, real estate funds and Governments.

Our main Immigration Law practice and procedure entails:
We have a long history of maintining relationships with corporate clients. Many of our clients have been with us for more than 20 years and it is our aim to maintain the highest level of communication and continuity in our work. As our clients develop and diversify their operations, so do their needs for which we care to cater for.
The firm undertakes formations; corporate reorganisations and reconstructions; corporate governance; private equity and capital raising; general commercial, contract and corporate advice; and public tender related work.
The majority of businesses, and local lawyers, have not felt the impact of competition and anti-trust regulation until quite recently, and despite the fact that national legislation has been around since 1989. Recently various developments have forced eveybody to take a second, and third look, in this field, invariably following in the footseps of other European jurisdictions; namely the inflow of overseas capital, investors and big business in Cyprus, the privitisation of previous state - held enterprises, and the pressures of a modern economy which strives to achieve, amongst others, economies of scale. The Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) has kept up with the times and has strengthened its role through ad hoc cartel related investigations and dawn raids, following up on complaints as well as investigating and clearing concentrations.
We have had extensive experience and we are proud to be contributing in the transformation of this field of law.
